Mini Matters 100% cotton fleece flat nappies with easy Snappi-grip finish are great workhorses for newborn bums. These 50x50cm flats are suitable for babies approximately 2 to 6kgs.
The cotton flat fabric (50 x 50 cm, newborn size) is folded and used as absorbent layers in cloth nappies. Fit around baby and fasten with a Snappi or Boingo (sold separately). You will need to use a waterproof newborn size cover over the folded cotton nappy. For a newborn you would need about 24 flats and five newborn size covers. This works really well as a trim and absorbent nappy on a newborn and is quick drying too which is fantastic for a quick laundry turnaround.
Just like traditional square nappies, this modern take is made from a trimmer, thinner fabric. A common complaint about newer flats is that Snappi fasteners don’t grip the fabric as well as the toweling nappies of old. Mini Matters has overcome that by using a special cotton fleece material that has a flat loop finish which allows for very easy Snappi gripping when you fold your flats with the textured side facing outwards. While it may seem daunting to fold flat nappies, it is actually much easier than you think once you get the hang of it.
For night time use, add a booster for extra absorbency and a stay-dry fleece liner for a good night’s sleep.
When baby outgrows the newborn size flat nappies, you will need larger flats and covers, but the great thing about flats is that they can continue to be used. The cotton squares can be pad folded and used as boosters when your baby is bigger, making flats really economical in the long term.
These cotton flats are made from a knitted cotton fabric. After the first wash your flats will be approximately 50cm x 50cm in size, but may not always be a perfect square due to the nature of the fabric. There may also be some rolling of the edges. Re-shaping and shaking them out while damp will give the best result in getting your flats to their perfect shape.
